To evaluate the density and subsequently the strength of bones, a DEXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan emits very low doses of X-rays. DEXA or bone densitometry are some of the alternate names for it.
The loss of bone density can be identified by DEXA, a quick and precise technique that is more sensitive than standard X-rays in considering bone density. Various bone disorders and medications can contribute to the loss of bone density. A DEXA scan is also useful in assessing injuries and lesions, as well as the success of management.
A DEXA scan has no adverse effects, so you can leave right afterwards and carry on with your regular daily activities.
The procedure may take up to 45 minutes on average for a DEXA scan.
